Copy the link to the Reddit post, open Kite: Video Downloader, paste the link and pick a resolution. The saved file plays with sound, because Kite fetches Reddit’s video stream and its separate audio stream and merges them into one ordinary video file before it reaches your library.
That merge is the reason this guide exists. Reddit hosts uploaded clips on its own service, v.redd.it, and it does not keep one finished file there. The picture and the sound sit in separate streams, in several qualities, and the Reddit player stitches them together while you watch. A tool that grabs only the video file gets a perfect picture and nothing else, which is why so many saved Reddit clips are silent. No setting on your phone puts the sound back afterwards, because it was never in the file.
One honest limit before the steps: Kite reads the public page behind a link, the same page a logged-out browser could open. Public posts work. Private subreddits, deleted posts and pages that insist on a login do not. What you need
- Kite: Video Downloader from Google Play, on a phone running Android 7.0 or newer. It is free and supported by ads — a banner and the occasional interstitial — with no subscription, and there is no account or sign-up.
- The link to the Reddit post you want to keep, from the Reddit app or from a browser.
- A few minutes, and enough free storage. A short v.redd.it clip is small; a long one at full resolution is not.
Step by step

Copy the post link. In the Reddit app, tap Share under the post, then Copy link. In a browser, the address-bar URL does the same job. Short share links and old.reddit.com addresses both lead the extractor to the same post, so use whichever you have. Copy the link to the post itself rather than to a comment inside it.

Open Kite and let it read the clipboard. Kite picks up a link you have just copied and offers it on the Home tab. If it does not appear, tap the input box, paste the link yourself and start the extraction. Kite then works out what is on the page.

Or find the post in Kite’s browser. Kite has a built-in browser that spots playable media on a page and offers to save it. This is the route when copying a link is awkward — you are already browsing a subreddit, or the link you have keeps opening the wrong screen.

Pick a resolution, or MP3. Kite lists every quality the source offers, from SD up to 4K where Reddit has it, with the container, codec and an estimated file size beside each option. Choose one and Kite handles the video-plus-audio merge for you; there is no box to tick. Let it download in the background. The download keeps running when you leave the app, and it survives closing the app. Live speed and progress show in the notification shade, with pause, resume and cancel there too. Up to three downloads run at once, and an interrupted one resumes instead of starting over. If you would rather not spend mobile data, turn on the Wi-Fi-only setting first, or schedule the download for later.

Play it from the library. Finished files appear on the Videos tab, alongside the video already on your phone, grouped by folder and searchable. They also land in a Kite folder that your gallery and file apps can see. Tap one to play it in place: the player has swipe gestures for brightness, volume and seek, hold for double speed, ten-second skips, picture-in-picture, and a queue of the clips saved beside it.

Optional extras, before or after. Before the download you can set a trim range and keep only the part of the clip you care about, and subtitles can be embedded when the source carries them. Afterwards, a saved file can be moved into the Private Vault, which is PIN-locked, encrypted and hidden from the gallery; everything in it stays on this device.
Galleries, GIFs and posts that link elsewhere
Not every Reddit post is a v.redd.it video, and the post type decides what happens when you paste the link.
A post that links to another site. A lot of the video on Reddit is not hosted by Reddit at all. The post is a link, and the player you see is an embed. Paste that post link into Kite and the extractor reads the source page instead. Kite recognises media pages from TikTok, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Vimeo, Twitch and Pinterest, plus a thousand or so other sites, so most of these resolve much like a native Reddit clip does. There is one deliberate exception: certain large video and music platforms that Google Play policy does not allow downloader apps to touch; Kite deliberately excludes them, so a post linking to one of those will report an error rather than a file.
GIF-style posts. Reddit converts uploaded GIFs into video, so they usually extract normally. Many of them have no audio track at all. That is not the split-stream problem — there is simply no sound in the source to merge.
Gallery and image posts. A Reddit gallery is a set of still pictures. There is no video or audio stream for an extractor to fetch, so a video downloader has nothing to do there.
If it does not work
The subreddit is private or quarantined
Kite saves from public pages only. A private subreddit shows nothing to a logged-out reader, so there is no page for the extractor to read, and a quarantined subreddit puts a warning screen in front of the content instead of the post. Both end in an error rather than a file. The quick test: open the post in a normal browser while signed out. If you cannot see the video there, Kite cannot reach it either.
The post is a crosspost
A crosspost is a pointer to a post somewhere else, and the video really lives on the original. Some crosspost links extract fine, and some return an error or the wrong clip. When that happens, tap through to the original post — the small line naming the source subreddit — copy that link, and paste it into Kite instead.
The clip has no audio track
Some Reddit videos are silent at the source, particularly ones that started life as GIFs. Play the post inside Reddit with the volume up before you blame the download. If it is silent there, it will be silent afterwards, because there is no audio stream to merge in.
It is waiting instead of downloading
Two settings hold downloads back on purpose. Wi-Fi-only makes a task wait until you are on Wi-Fi, and a scheduled download waits for its time. Check the Progress tab to see which one applies. Otherwise, check that you are online: extraction has to reach the page first.
The legal bit
Kite is a tool for personal use. Save only content you own or have permission to save, respect the terms of the sites you visit, and respect the rights of the people who made what you are watching. A Reddit clip is usually someone else’s work, and keeping a copy to watch offline is not the same as republishing it. Kite does not bypass copy protection of any kind: material protected by DRM is declined rather than downloaded. There is no account, no analytics of Kite’s own and no Kite server, so downloads, history and settings stay on the device.
